Mabel's San Diego Reviews
Damn, the Spanish G and T went down quickly.
A really fun night, with great food. Squid salad-a plethora of flavors, the bread is not to be missed with the excellent salted butter. Pan con tomato-each bite so flavorful. You can't lose if you order ham or cheese. Waitress went above and beyond and was incredibly kind. Quite plentiful servings for small plates, so much so that we took home the Basque cheesecake for later because it looked like something that should not be missed.
We really enjoyed the experience.
The Spanish G&T was absolutely delicious. The wine list is not that extensive. My husband was served a fermented wine of some sort. The server kept asking him if he wanted to taste it first but failed to explain that it was not a normal wine. It was promptly returned. The food was delicious and very flavorful. We had the squid salad, the sea bass which was a generous portion. We took home the basque cheesecake which was very creamy and light. Small place but they pack them in. We had a reservation but still had to wait 15 minutes for a table. We will go back.
Went last night to Mabel's.
The food was so good, literally every dish we ordered. The giganta beans were amazing, yes beans. The service was also top notch and the staff was so friendly. I highly recommend Mabel's. Loved it!
Went here on a Friday night during summer.
The place is crazy busy. We had a reservation but still had to wait 15 minutes to get a table. This is very much a tapas place. No real main dishes. We had the chorizo/cheese, fresh salad, fried sea bass and the basque cheese cake. The food was tasty and came out at a good pace. The cocktail and wine list is rather limited and not crazy about the wine selection. This is a great gem in North Park but it's noisy and very busy.
Had an amazing time at the Bar, had a delicious dinner.
Everything we ordered was on point! Muscles escabeche a must. Also the bartender was awesome!
Super Wow! Cocktails, Wine, Small Plates.
Thank you Danny and Luna, chef and team...amazing, as usual!
We had amazingly delicious dinner here.
Wonderful staff, very busy restaurant with inside & some outside seating. We love shareable meals. We had smoked fish sandwich, tortilla espanola, grilled fish, squid salad, summer squash. Fun, casual and relaxed atmosphere.

We didn't expect to sit at the "bar" facing the chefs since we made a reservation well in advance but it was a cool experience seeing them cook! The food was amazing. It was hard to pick a favorite as everything was truly delicious and unique. The swordfish was to die for and our server brought out bread when we finished it so we could finish the sauce - it was that good!
It feels like you're stepping into Spain when you walk in
It feels like you're stepping into Spain when you walk in here they have a fantastic selection of vermouth and gin cocktails. The mussels were delicious. Staff was very kind and attentive. A gem in North Park!
Really great experience.
Good variety of food, all of it delicious. Good drinks, better dessert. We especially liked the cheese, the swordfish, and the affogato. Service was very welcoming. Felt like they were happy we were there, which is not as common a feeling as it used to be.
The food here was wonderful.
My rule for eating out is that it has to be better than anything I could cook at home & this definitely delivered. If you aren't a fan of seafood, I'd suggest finding another place to eat. Their swordfish was so delicious and cooked to perfection. We did the tasting plate which came with 4 courses. I recommend this option so you can taste more of the menu. It started with some of their starter plates including assorted olives, marinated muscles, the house smoked mackerel (which came with fresh lemon and was bursting with savory flavor), and stuffed dates. Then came the delicious apple and cheddar salad & Kampachi (YUMM). Then the swordfish, which came with a sauce and was cooked perfectly. And lastly the most flavorful toasted caramel tasting cheesecake. I am not a fan of cheesecake but that was irresistible!
Awesome place.
Great food and service. I highly recommend this place. Everything we tried was delicious and fresh.
One of the best raw bar places you can go to.
Super fresh oysters and they have great cheeses. I also had their quiche with cavier which was pretty good to try once but not what I would usually get. The staff was nice and if you don't know what to get, they have amazing recommendations. Definately would come again
Note to self: next time arrive towards the end of happy
Note to self: next time arrive towards the end of happy hour (4-5 pm) for half-priced oysters by the dozen and discounted craft cocktails, then stay past 6 for dinner! On this occasion, we arrived on the dot at 4 and filled up on snacks (also delicious so really no regrets ;) so only had room for dessert once the full menu opened. I'm a gin fan and thought my Spanish G and T (Nordes, lemon, grape, sage) was outrageously good, while even my "had a bad gin experience in college" dining companion enjoyed his Rotating G and T (Jin Jiji India Dry, lemon, clove, mint), both featuring Mabel's house-made tonic. 3 each of Swinomish, Blue Pool, Calm Cove, and Kushi oysters from the Daily Selection had me in slurp heaven, and the Mussels Escabeche (smoked paprika, grilled sourdough, aioli) and Stuffed Dates (Jamon Serrano, almonds) were terrific as well. We finished with a Basque Cheesecake (cajeta) and Chocolate Mousse (pine nuts, puffed farro) which complemented each other well as the first was less sweet and the second more so. Service was attentive without being overbearing and the ambiance casual yet inviting.
Finally got the chance to try this place out.
Sat at the bar with a friend because all the tables were unavailable (despite making a reservation well in advance). I love the dim-lit, swanky, sultry vibe of this place. The bartenders were also the nicest and most attentive I've ever came across. I was a bit disappointed that we made it clear we were celebrating a birthday, but they didn't do anything to acknowledge it. Drinks: lots of gin-based options. I got the gimlet and the dry G+T. Also tried a bit of the El Niรฑo and negroni. The drinks do take a minute to prepare because they are hand crafted with lots of care to order. However, I found that they were weak and very watered/sugared down, especially for drinks they described as "spirit-forward." I don't think they were worth $16-17 a cocktail at all. Food: will have to go back to try, but it smelled and looked delicious from what I saw on other patrons' plates!! Definitely the spot for seafood. Vibe: great for an intimate date night!!
Great North Park location that is the perfect date night
Great North Park location that is the perfect date night spot, with great lighting and music! They have the best oysters and they are perfectly shucked. Anna was super helpful and attentive bartender and provided us with a n/a cocktails. Love the bar seating!
This place is a joke.
We ordered two dishes and both lacked any type of cooking skills. For the "Jamon Serrano" they simply purchased prosciutto and bread from third parties, arranged it on a plate and charged us 3x the cost or more. Likewise the mussels dish was underwhelming. They poured some chile oil over mussels and that was it. Wish I never came here. Also cocktail selection sucks! Waste of money and time.

Come along with Mabel for a delightful seaside trip full of oceanic goodies! San Diego is a prime location to enjoy seafood from both local and international waters. With its Iberian-inspired flavors, Mabel's has escaped the ho-hum of tuna tartare, crudo, and overpriced seafood towers and emerged with interesting new options. My partner and I made a reservation for a belated Valentine's Day dinner. At 7 PM on a weeknight, the restaurant was pretty full, so we were seated at the counter, where we had a prime view of the goings-on in the kitchen. We marveled at the ability of the chefs to peacefully and efficiently execute the range of dishes on the menu. None of that "get the f- off my expo line chef," which, while also entertaining, would have made for a far less welcoming experience. This was also a good way for us to have a peek at what the dishes looked like to guide our ordering process. The menu is large enough to offer a variety of options, but not so large that it causes decision paralysis. We started with the mussels escabeche [$16] and stuffed dates [$10]. The mussels were plump and accompanied by grilled sourdough and aioli. I felt the presentation was a little casual- even if not meant to be eaten, a little garnish would elevate it. The stuffed dates were pretty good, and maybe an idea I'll have to steal for future dinner parties. Next up, the gambas al ajillo [$22 + $2 for optional bread] and grilled swordfish [$38]. Regarding the gambas, I expected the traditional appearance of this popular Spanish dish but was surprised to receive a plate of fried shrimp and flavors that, thanks to the chili oil and chives, tasted very familiar. It felt closer to the salt-and-pepper shrimp found in Chinese restaurants, but this is definitely not a criticism of the dish. This was one of our favorite dishes, and as someone who eats shrimp shells (sorry!), hearing that the shells on these were meant to be edible earned it some brownie points. Since it wasn't the traditional presentation, in the end, the bread was not really necessary, but too much bread is never an issue. I was a little nervous about the swordfish since this meaty fish can be overcooked, but the focus of the chef grilling the fish that night inspired a lot of confidence. Indeed, the swordfish was perfectly cooked! We liked this dish a lot; it was a good portion for sharing, and the treviso and saffron bรฉarnaise added some interesting dimensions to the plate. While we were starting to become full by this point, we forged on with a plate of Chorizo Ibรฉrico [$14] and smoked trout rillettes [$16]. I'm not a big 'rizo girlie, but I want to say that adding an olive oil drizzle was an understated yet impactful positive decision. On the other hand, I am a big fan of fish rillettes, and Mabel's interpretation did not disappoint. After this, we were absolutely stuffed... but we had to try the Basque cheesecake that was so well-received by reviewers. We conquered about a third of it before tapping out. In reflection, I think one area for improvement is offering other carbs besides the sourdough. Don't get me wrong, I love bread (love isn't a big enough word to encapsulate my feelings for bread), but 3 of the dishes we ordered had this sourdough and I admit I did feel a bit overwhelmed. For drinks, we shared the vermut rojo [$10] and blanco [$12]. I was craving the former since my last trip to Spain, and excited to try the latter as it's a one-of-a-kind offering composed with locally foraged botanicals. We also tried the Barcelona v. Real Madrid [$16], mostly due to the name. Since this is explicitly a gin-focused venue, I won't knock it too much, but I also wish there were a couple more gin-less cocktail options. Our waitress was friendly, approachable, and patient as we sorted through our choices from the menu. She was always available to take our additional orders but never intrusive. Subjectively, I would describe Mabel's as Good (and good is great!). Nothing really blew me away, but every dish was well-executed and enjoyable. It's not boring by any means; it's not too out-there; the kitchen runs like a well-oiled machine and executes its menu confidently and diligently. I know this movement is on its way out, but this restaurant is especially great for those looking for a more elevated Girl Dinner. Our appetites have been whetted, and we are already planning our next visit!
If I could give this 3.
5 stars, I would. With the exception of the dates, the food was fine or quite good. The service was friendly but with that tinge of elitism that makes you feel like you don't belong. I had the trout--not my usual choice in fish, as I have only had it in the days when my father would drag me fishing and we'd cook and eat it later. I was surprised that Mabel's trout was pink, and asked if that was normal. The waiter gave me one of those exhausted looks and said simply, "yes, it's normal." I've since looked it up and know that pink is the sign of a healthy diet in a trout. Taking a moment to explain that to me would have gone a long way. The smoked potatoes were excellent, as other reviewers noted, as were the oysters. The dates had a mealy quality I would not have expected at a restaurant in this price range. The fish was prepared well and the most of the interactions with service was fine.

How have I never been here before?! We had reservations and were a couple minutes early. The host let us know our table was wrapping up and they had us wait in their event space. It was super comfortable and they took our drink orders. To drink, I wanted a glass of wine and the server recommended the Bical/Arinto. It was really good! Light and crisp. Just a few minutes later we were seated at our table. Our server came and went through the menu with us. Everything was tapas style or shareable. We started with the olives, bread and butter, and mussels eacabeche. The mussels were soo good! Everyone loved them! For the main, we got the grilled swordfish and smoked potatoes. The smoked potatoes were incredible! You could fully taste the smokiness in the potatoes! The clams on toast had garlic and tomatoes that made it super flavorful. For dessert, we got an affogato and a carajillo. The carajillo was super impressive! It was served and it looked more like an old fashioned but was soo delicious! Perfect way to end the meal!
Nice Dinner at Mabel's Gone Fishing
Mabelโs Gon Fishing had been recommended by a few of my work friends so we decided to have a family dinner there. It fit the bill as a trendy North Park restaurant. The food was very good and the service excellent. I look forward to going back. There is a small parking lot in the back, but we ended up parking on the street a few blocks away. We had an early reservation so were seated right away. Our waiter Kevin turned out to be very efficient and informative. He was very knowledgeable about the menu and made some very nice wine recommendations. Attentive without hovering. The signature Spanish Gin and Tonic was worth it. Light and refreshing. But be carefulโฆ We were glad we decided to go with the Chefโs Tasting Menu. The initial course included Spanish olives, Mussels Escabeche and House Smoked Mackerel, and Jamon wrapped dates. The Mackerel melted in your mouth. The problem with the dates was that there were not more of them. The Sword fish steak was good as a main, but the smoked potatoes stole the show, the best that I have ever had. Finally, dessert was Basque Cheesecake. Not as sweet as the American version and a bit fluffier, very nice. The bathrooms were clean and well lit. I would have to say that tab seemed a little on the high side, but we all decided that the easy atmosphere, excellent service and very tasty food made it worth the experience.
GREAT SEAFOOD
Excellent seafood, and a welcome addition to San Diego's restaurant lineup. Smoked mackerel was tender and flavorful, served on very good sourdough bread. Ocean trout was equally good, cooked perfectly, just slightly rare. And Basque cheesecake was as smooth as NY cheesecake but with the added flavor of a caramelized sauce under it. My only disappointment was the cocktail, as the gimlet tasted nothing like what I was looking for, more like a margarita. Next time, I'll stick with beer or wine. The staff is friendly. The atmosphere in the room is vibrant, though a little loud for easy conversation. Street parking is difficult, but there is a commercial parking structure close by.
Order the cheesecake!
Server was very friendly and the place was packed. Menu is limited but we found four items to share between the two of us. Cheesecake was delicious with carmelized goat milk sauce. Iberian authenticity makes Mabelโs a stand out!
Mabel's Gone Fishing - a BIG disappointment
We made reservations at Mabel's Gone Fishing due to its national recognition by Michelin and raving reviews by friends. We wanted to have lunch so chose the brunch on a Sunday. The menu for brunch was not the same menu for dinner and no menus were posted online. We arrived early and they took us in immediately. The ambiance was okay - nothing special. The noise level from conversations in the restaurant made it very difficult for us to hear each other and we were seated directly in front of each other at a small table. The menu was interesting, and the waiter talked us through the various brunch dishes and recommended the two dishes we chose because they were very popular. We had the Tortilla Espanola and the Seafood Merguez Hash. We were told when we ordered that the dishes that they would come out separately when ready for serving - so one of the dishes came you several minutes before the second one. If we had not eaten the first dish right away it would have been cold before the second dish was delivered. Although the salad on top was good, the rest of the Tortilla Espanola was dry and badly needed seasoning. The Seafood Merguez Hash's potatoes were tasty, but the seafood sausage and the rest of the dish were meh โ almost tasteless. We walked away from brunch very disappointed. Since the restaurant is highly recommended for its dinner menu, we recommend that you make dinner reservations and avoid the brunch. You can find a better brunch at other restaurants in North Park. The food choices we made would likely not win any awards or recognition.
Exceptionally delicious food! A bit loud in the restaurant
Exceptionally delicious food! A bit loud in the restaurant , lots of energy. A happening place . If you have a hard time hearing it would be challenging to converse with your party . The wait staff is wonderful.
Almost all great.
It was a long waiting time in some room next to the restaurant though we had reservation. Ordered a bunch of different items. Didn't like the mussels, tastes like canned stuff to me. Claims were good, swordfish steak was great. fried potatoes were the best, interesting combination! Drinks were good, interesting wine list. Overall it was a good experience and great food. Cheesecake was pretty good and fresh
New places that I rarely go unless one of my friends
New places that I rarely go unless one of my friends mentioned it. We are trying our best to go to places we haven't been and sometimes it works out, other times its just meh. Mabel's Gone Fishing is one of the newer places in the North Park area where various small places are located. It's a walking area with bars and food shops around this block of University and 30th St. Hey they even have a Target mini around the corner. My expectations were high since it bills itself as a ginteria and oysteria. More of the oyster part and less the gin part. I rarely drink more than a cocktail nowadays. Reservations need to be made as it's a small place with walkins on a weekend harder to get. My friends who joined us were there previously so they have a better idea of the food and partly drinks. Mabel's is styled like a Spanish restaurant with cocktails and foods created for sharing. They do have entrees (just in case you are on a dinner date). Since most places rotate menus, I can not reassure anyone if a dish still will be served when you go. Shared food menus might vary a little. Catch of the day (grilled whole) is obviously based on what fish is available. We had the Snapper which came out beautiful. One question, we saw another table ordering the same and the server removed the bone in front of them. When we inquired later, they said, it was per server's ability to do it and request. So next time we will ask first. The rest of the menu seemed great for sharing, some were to go to but others I can leave. I ordered oysters and they were wonderful (market price since some were from Washington and some from BC) We also ordered mussels escabeche, olives, white wine on their distinct bottle, patatas bravas and for dessert, grilled Basque cheesecake. Overall we enjoyed our meal, although sound levels are pretty loud (small and many diners = loud). My first gin cocktail and it was pretty smooth - La Barceloneta. Will try another time, maybe not on a weekend night when it was super busy.

Goes to Spain once and decides to open a "tapas" inspired restaurant. Tapas options were limited as well as unavailable. And I'm so disappointed that this review is less than stellar because I had high hopes. My main frustration is that many items on the already small-ish menu were unavailable. So, what do you do when you get to a "tapas" restaurant and there are no tapas? You order the usual oysters and sashimi. Then, you order some other stuff (like grilled whole fish and potatoes) that you didn't really want, but you have no choice. And that ends up being underwhelming because it's not cooked properly or slathered with creme fraiche. Also, you want to order wine but can't read the tiny font and non-descript wine list. But you end up ordering weird, pretentious cocktails with flavor profiles that don't make any sense. And finally, you end up spending $215. for a party of 2. And end up regretting spending $115.Once again, mediocracy rules in San Diego.
We made a reservation at 8:15 on a Saturday night.
We were immediately seated. Our server quickly went over the popular items and we ordered the oysters and tuna right away. The foods came as they were ready with a good amount of space in between. We ordered both the salads , crispy potatoes the battered white fish and swordfish Schnitzel. The fish portions were pretty generous and I think we would have been good with only ordering one of the fish items. Nonetheless the food was delicious. I am pregnant so I did not get a chance to try the good looking gin cocktails or oysters. So will definitely come back again to Mabels. Service was great, ambiance is nice. My favorite dishes was the pear and celery salad, potato crisp, and the tuna hamachi. Will be back.
My husband and I had a fabulous meal tonight.
Amy was the hostess, and she was very attentive. She noticed our table wasn't quite stable and placed things under the feet to make it stable. Without us even asking. She also kept checking on us along with our server. Our server was Mozar. He was excellent. Very knowledgeable about all the dishes as well as the wine. The food was excellent. The service was excellent. We will be going back. The dishes we had were the olives, the bread, mancheco cheese and Iberico ham. After that, we shared the swordfish. It was absolutely fabulous. It had a fennel, mint and parsley salad and was very delicious.
Best potatoes and oysters I've ever had.
I love the wine, oysters, olives, and bread. The food was served with good timing. The food and wine here is excellent but my issue is with the service. Charging $8 for still water rubbed me the wrong way. They did not present an option of free water which is a new first for me at a restaurant. Our server might have been in a bad mood serving our group from the get-go, leaving many uncomfortable.

This place was absolutely amazing! My wife and I had an Incredible dinner! They provided great service and we both loved our drinks too. We loved everything we ordered. My favorite was the whole fried red snapper. It's prepared Vietnamese style so it comes with a tangy dipping sauce and variety of herbs so you can make the perfect bite every time. We're obviously coming back!

We enjoyed the food, which was well prepared with a bit of creativity. The service, however, was the reason I am giving it 3 stars instead of 4. We weren't greeted for a while when we walked in, as the host was busy talking on the phone, which is understandable as the place was busy. Then we were seated at the corner of bar in front of the oyster display, which felt very cramped. I am talking about touching your neighbors kind of tight space, and very limited table top space for the dishes. It's cool to see the kitchen, though. The waitress was fine but the service wasn't exceptional. For me personally, the service is a big part of the whole dining experience. If you don't mind a loud and crowded place with average service , this place is worth a stop for the food.

I struggle to write this review because the food was quite good!! So I will start off with that, food here is amazing. We ordered appetizers:Iberico pork with chili and a dozen Washington oystersSides:Crispy potatoes, winter salad, and the mushroomsEntrees: the catch of the day fish - snapper ($62) and the clams in ham brothWhat made our first experience here unpleasant was definitely the service. I understand it might have just been an off day and they were quite busy, but nonetheless less our experience was marred because we couldn't enjoy our meal how we wanted to. We ordered quite a lot of food (bill came out to over $200 for 2 people) but the timing was less than desired. Our appetizers came out and we finished them, next our sides came out which we were hoping to eat with our entree so we sampled some of it while it was fresh and tried to wait for our entree to come. Our server had even recommended us to get the salad because it would pair well with the fish entree. We waited 40 minutes for our entree to come out after we got our sides. On top of that, we had ordered the clams in ham broth but our server forgot to put the order in. She offered to put it in for us after we got our fish but we didn't want to wait potentially 40 more minutes for our second entree.I have mixed feelings about coming back due to this experience, but what food we did get to try was great. Hoping it was just a bad night.
Simply outstanding food: uniquely prepared: we thought
Simply outstanding food: uniquely prepared: we thought "Tapas? let's not under order"! MISTAKE!; Very filling! we had a great server:Delicious! If you want romance, however, go to The Red Door
My experience was not great.
I was a walk in. Just me. The hostess said I could have this table if I could be in and out in an hour and fifteen as they had a reservation. I said no problem! I ordered my cocktail, and my food. All raw items - oysters and crudo. Two cocktails and an hour later I never got my food. I told the waitress to just cancel the order if it hadn't been started since I had to go. She said to me "maybe come back when you have more time." The time restriction was placed due to the restaurant, not me. She made it seem like I was the impatient one when I literally ordered two raw items and still hadn't received them after an hour. Two stars for the decent cocktails.
Service, impeccable.
Casual and friendly yet so detailed and pristine. Drinks were phenomenal. We had the gimlet, the Negroni, and the la Rambla. All were so unique and perfectly balanced. The food? Unreal. The swordfish was the best swordfish I've had. The potatoes and mushrooms were absolutely delicious. This might just be the best spot around town! Can't wait to be back. Simply incredible.
Wow! Unbelievable cocktail program and kitchen that is
Wow! Unbelievable cocktail program and kitchen that is hitting on all cylinders. Our party of 5 sampled widely and did not identify a single dud on the menu. Highlights included the smoked mackerel, clams in fish broth, and those potatoes. Mmmmmm. Those potatoes. Make sure you save room for the basque cheesecake (light, savory, and well balanced) and chocolate mousse.Unforgettable night. Our highest recommendation!
The food was not good.
We tried several dishes. Small plates style serving and over priced. The oysters were good but that's about it. The bar area for seating is over crowed. Not enough space for dining. Won't be back.
