Expectations clearly exceeded with top food

3/5 by 👻 @MMLenz on 04/22/2024

We reserved well in advance and were given the time slot from 6:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. for a Saturday evening; rules clear? Unfortunately only for us guests... at 8:05 p.m. the service staff put the bill down without being asked: "I don't want to rush you, but I need your table in 10 minutes!" Food: Surprise menu We enjoyed every bite! There were several taste sensations. Everything was of good quality and the different courses were really great. There was not enough in terms of quantity. I wanted to order more bread: "That will take 10 - 15 minutes." For reasons that became clear later, I was advised against it - they needed our table. Wine accompaniment The first wine had to be enough for two courses - so exactly the wine you toast with and wait for the first bite. They were so stingy when pouring (all the wines) that there wasn't even enough for a proper toast. For CHF 63 we received 4 glasses of wine - with the dessert wine we were told that you shouldn't drink it in large quantities (we got just under a deciliter). If you consider that a cheap French Shiraz was served with the main course (purchase price well under CHF 20), the wine accompaniment turned out to be a bad, completely overpriced joke. Service Stressed from the first minute - the boss was absent and there was not enough room for three people. But they were friendly and knew exactly what we were eating and drinking. They managed well in the tight space. In the almost two hours they dropped something at least six times - they were really stressed. The saying at the end: A no-go, which was addressed on the spot. Conclusion Great food, nice restaurant, overpriced wines, stressed but nice staff. Final price CHF 386 for two people - definitely too much for this evening. A reunion? Sometime, gladly - without wine and with adjusted expectations.

A great meal, with a communication challenge

5/5 by 👻 @Dkip on 04/21/2024

This is an absolutely fantastic restaurant for an exceptional meal. The food is spectacularly good, and the atmosphere very pleasant. We took the full menu, and it was a succession of extremely tasty surprises. There was enough food to be perfectly satiated, but without feeling too full either. Just the perfect combination. If you decide to go though, make sure to communicate clearly with your waiter(ress), as some of them seem to not speak german (or english for that matter). But they do their best, and you will leave this place very happy.

if you want to overpay for someone 's (lack of) cooking talents

2/5 by 👻 @MSavova on 04/07/2024

Staff in un-ironed T-shirts. Is this now cool? Maybe they think it is a statement. Whatever you think about that, the worst thing is you wait forever until the many if them agree who is serving your table and finally comes with the menu. Thy have no clue neither about the menu not about the wine list. Sorry, but at a place where a portion of 120 g or so of beef (with a number of useless ketchups & co accompanying ) costs 62 chf(!!!), one does expect better. OK, at least I do. The prosecco, coming from a "fancy", non traditional bottle, is the worst ever... a totally artificial yellow colour and taste...the bottle opened probably three days before they served us, a least there were no bubbles at all... The food...so many ingredients mixed-at the end you have no clue what you are eating...to eat a fresh Spargel, the queen of vegetables, in season here, is a luxury, but not if you kill it until the point of no recognition... sad...disastrous in my view. I give rating two, because at lest I had the feeling the food was prepared with fresh and well selected ingredients. I am never returning here, it would be one night (and a lot of money) more waisted.

Disappointing venue and service

3/5 by 👻 @Bohemia1956 on 03/13/2024

We came to this restaurant based on the Michelin tasting Bib Gourmand. We were very surprised and disappointed at the tavern atmosphere when we walked inside. We would have walked out if we weren’t informed that cancellation would result in a 125 CHF per person charge for cancellations. It was loud and hugely understated, with the waitstaff and several customers in T shirts and sneakers. Being Michelin rated, we got dressed up but we certainly could have come in jeans. As soon as we sat down, we were informed of the 5 CHF per person charge for either still or bubbly water. We had just had a great meal at Restaurant Gandria the night before where we had fantastic service and food, with a 1 l bottle of water for 3.5 CHF total. But that was just the start of our negative experience. We decided to try the 5 course tasting menu for 125 each and the 65 each wine pairing. A very small pour of a nice unfiltered bubbly came out which we were told was supposed to last us for the first 2 courses. The first course was wonderful with a bit of an Asian flair - an interesting custard with a Parmesan crispy topping. The sparkling wine went well with that but now we only had about a tablespoon left and we were presented with a wonderful sourdough farm bread and excellent butter with a mixed salt topping. Along with that was a carrot starter and very nice pork mini dumplings. Finally another wine came out. The waiter poured me a nice white Tokay but the bottle was finished. Instead of opening a new bottle, he brought out a white Piedmont varietal which tasted awful from a bottle that was probably open for too long. Neither one of us could drink that and we complained about it but weren’t offered a different white, though they did discount the bill by 12.5. The course with this was scallops with Jerusalem artichoke that would have been delicious except that the scallops were a bit off from not being all that fresh. The best course was sucking pig with a crispy though chewy skin served with a vegetable puree and cranberries. The accompanying wine was a tanic very young Grenache where a Pinot noir would have been a much better pairing. Dessert was excellent and paired with a wonderfully sweet Chardonnay from grapes left on the vines to develop high brix content. The service was definitely disrespectful. We had had a long tour day and needed to make online arrangements for the next day. My husband was on his phone getting everything done and when one of the courses came, I addressed him by his first name and asked him to pay attention to the waiter. We are seniors and were shocked when after this, the waiter made some sarcastic remarks to my husband and called him by his first name, even though we didn’t know him and never gave him permission to be so familiar. This kind of service and ambiance wouldn’t surprise us in a family restaurant, but not in a Michelin rated one. The chef is good but the service and loud casual atmosphere don’t justify the very high prices. We would never eat here again in the future! Zurich has much better restaurant choices.

The ambience was warm, friendly and cosy. The food was delightful - they were really accomplishing about my food restrictions and took great care to check on ingredients to make sure there was nothing I could not eat.

A plate of pasta for CHF 39.-

3/5 by 👻 @Martin Bauer on 02/16/2024

Nenad Mlinarevic shows how it's done. For CHF 39, you can get a two-course meal in the Bauernschänke; consisting of three amuse-bouches and a plate of pasta. Period. Plus two glasses of wine, two espressos and water. Total CHF 123. Almost forgot: there's also a tattooed waiter who speaks English and doesn't really fit in with the Bauernschänke and the upscale ambience. Conclusion: You can also find good pasta and cool, tattooed waiters in Zurich in District 4 or 5. The only difference is that a plate of pasta costs half as much there. https://www.tripadvisor.ch/ShowUserReviews-g188113-d1228019-r938496631-Bauernschanke-Zurich.html#

"Shoemaker, stick to your last"

3/5 by 👻 @Marc N on 02/09/2024

I had never heard of the inn before. For me, farms and inns embody heartiness, down-to-earthness and good value for money. The restaurant is exactly the image of a simple, somewhat dated and worn inn. It lacks any chic, any flair, it is impersonal and cold. The bench at our table was very uncomfortable. The menu is straightforward, with tapas on page 1 and a menu on page 2. The service was very friendly, fluent and communicative in several languages. We ordered six different tapas to share for three people. The average price per tapa, however, was an astonishing CHF 36.66! The tapas were prepared in a rustic way with a touch of sophistication. The quality was good, but the portions were small. The price bears no relation to the quality and quantity of the food, nor to the simple decor and sparse furnishings of the restaurant. As the saying goes, "Shoemaker, stick to your last," and the tavern should reflect what its name suggests and what the place embodies on the inside. In Zurich, the most expensive city in the world, unfortunately, many things are simply overpriced.

Outstanding food / awful customer treatment (last minute bumped reservation)

2/5 by 👻 @Phil on 12/14/2023

Exceptional food unlike anything else in town; local ingredients with a hint of an Asian twist, very skilfully executed. Service on the less polite side of things at times, but overall ok. Excellent natural wine menu. However, do not rely on your reservation counting for anything! Despite having made what turned out to be a reservation request on their online system over two weeks ago, I was told the evening before my reservation (Friday before Christmas) that I wasn’t going to get a table. I called several times and was promised a call back, sent emails to resolve the matter (eg later time slot), explaining I had an important guest from abroad: no response. It seemed like they were waiting for more important guests only to let me know at the last second I wasn’t welcome after all. Feels really badly to be treated like this and then ignored.
